India's summer (March–June) is genuinely hard on leather. Temperatures above 35°C, humidity fluctuations, and 4–5 months of non-wearing create specific storage challenges that standard leather care advice from European sources doesn't address. Here's what actually works in Indian conditions.
The Pre-Storage Clean and Condition
Before storing your jacket for summer, clean and condition it properly. Wipe down with a barely damp cloth to remove body oils and surface dust. Allow to dry completely — at least 12 hours. Then apply a generous coat of leather conditioner. This creates a moisture barrier that protects against humidity fluctuations during storage.
Storage Environment Requirements
The single most important factor: air circulation. Never store leather in a sealed plastic bag — moisture accumulates, encouraging mildew. Use a breathable cotton garment bag or a cotton pillowcase as a dust cover. The jacket needs to breathe even when not worn.
Temperature: ideally below 30°C. If your storage space regularly exceeds 35°C (common in Indian summers), consider placing silica gel packets nearby to absorb excess humidity.
The Hanger Rule
Always hang — never fold. Even for short-term storage. Leather develops permanent creases when folded that no conditioning or treatment removes. A wide-shoulder wooden hanger distributes the jacket's weight correctly and prevents shoulder distortion.
Cedar Blocks: The Indian Summer Advantage
Cedar blocks serve double duty in Indian summer storage: they repel clothes moths (a real threat in India's warm climate) and absorb ambient moisture. Place 2–3 cedar blocks in the garment bag alongside the jacket. Replace or refresh cedar blocks annually.
Suede-Specific Summer Storage
Suede is more vulnerable than smooth leather to humidity damage — mold can develop on the nap surface if humidity is high and air circulation is poor. Brush the suede lightly before storage, apply suede conditioner, and store with cedar. Check monthly for any white powdery spots — this is early mold growth and requires immediate treatment with a suede cleaner.
